![]() Compressive stress often generates two cross‐cutting joint sets.A fault is a fracture or zone of fractures between two blocks of rock. Faults allow the blocks to move relative to each other. This movement may occur rapidly, in the form of an earthquake - or may occur slowly, in the form of creep. Faults may range in length from a few millimeters to thousands of kilometers. Most faults produce repeated displacements over geologic time. During an earthquake, the rock on one side of the fault suddenly slips with respect to the other. The fault surface can be horizontal or vertical or some arbitrary angle in between.Įarth scientists use the angle of the fault with respect to the surface (known as the dip) and the direction of slip along the fault to classify faults. Faults which move along the direction of the dip plane are dip-slip faults and described as either normal or reverse (thrust), depending on their motion. Faults which move horizontally are known as strike-slip faults and are classified as either right-lateral or left-lateral. Faults which show both dip-slip and strike-slip motion are known as oblique-slip faults. Tensional stress usually results in a single joint orientation that is perpcndicular to the direction of stress. A joint set is composed of a series of roughly parallel joints that occur in one direction. Joints are generally the result of a rock mass adjusting to compressive or tensional stress or cooling. The hanging wall block and footwall block of a thrust fault are typically called the upper plate and lower plate, respectively (Figure 4). ![]() Thrust faults are reverse dip‐slip faults in which the hanging wall block has overridden the footwall block at a very shallow angle for tens of kilometers. A horst results when a block that is bounded by normal faults experiences a tensional force that forces the block upward, forming mountainous terrain (Figure 3). If the fault blocks show both horizontal and vertical displacement, the fault is termed an oblique‐slip.Ī graben is formed when a block that is bounded by normal faults slips downward, usually because of a tensional force, creating a valley-like depression. ![]() A right‐lateral strike‐slip fault is one in which the displacement appears to the right when looking across the fault (Figure 2). If a person is standing at the fault and looks across to see that a feature has been displaced to the left, it is called a left‐lateral strike‐slip fault. The blocks on either side of a strike‐slip fault move horizontally in relation to each other, parallel to the strike of the fault. A reverse dip‐slip fault is just the opposite: the hanging wall block has moved upward relative to the footwall block (Figure 1). A normal dip‐slip fault, or normal fault, is one in which the hanging wall block has slipped down the fault plane relative to the footwall block. The block that underlies an inclined dip‐slip fault is called the footwall the block that rests on top of the inclined fault plane is called the hanging wall. Movement in a dip‐slip fault is parallel to the dip of the fault plane in an “up” or “down” direction between the two blocks. Three kinds of fault movements are recognized: dip‐slip, strike‐slip, and oblique‐slip. A fault is generally considered active if movement has occurred along it during the past 10,000 years.įault movements. The rocks within a fault zone may also be hydrothermally altered or veined from hot solutions that have migrated up the fault zone. The broken material within a fault is called fault gouge. The fault can be merely a crack between the two sides of rock, or it can be a fault zone hundreds of meters wide that consists of rock that has been very fractured, brecciated, and pulverized from repeated grinding movements along the fault plane. Horizontal or vertical displacement along the fault plane can range from a few centimeters to hundreds of kilometers. If the rock has been displaced along a fracture, such as having one side that is moved up or down, the fracture is called aįault, and if there is no displacement along the crack, the fracture is called aįaults. Fractures if it is hard and brittle and subjected to sudden strain that overcomes its internal crystalline bonds. ![]() This is unfortunate, but hopefully the producers will take note and ensure they use the variance factor to their advantage and do better with other incarnations of this character. His mannerisms and persona at times kill some of the tension and it borders on annoying. What does not quite work is the character played by Jonathan Majors. Well done to Tom Hiddleston for bringing so much enjoyment to the MCU with his portrayals of the character. He also retains an edge of uncertainty that should make the character compelling for future appearances. The potential for this has always been there and it has been done well. Loki has gone through a decent character arc throughout the series and made a transition from entertaining villain to a fairly lovable protagonist. Plus the questions it asks about fate versus free will are as interesting as ever. They do their best to make what is essentially one huge information dump as cinematic as possible by adding a tense atmosphere, great art design, cutaways to the TVA and a solid dilemma for Loki and Sylvie. It feels like it is the writers' way of making sure that what could be a complicated sci-fi concept for a mainstream audience is explained as simply as possible. The plot has been criticised for having an overly talky script and yes this episode is very talky, but (without counting the minutes) it did not feel more so than what has come before. This is solid finish to the first series of Loki that does an effective job of setting up future MCU stories and made me want to find out what happens next. ![]() Loki and Sylvie find out the origins the TVA and it's purpose. We used multiple publicly available resources to aggressively identify medical and non-medical usages. For each word token, we extracted all corresponding text lines. The total number of our word tokens in the corpus was 13.9 billion corresponding to 61.8 million unique word tokens. The corpus includes all notes generated from a diverse range of medical specialties. In this paper, leveraging a large collection of clinical notes in our clinical data warehouse, we investigated the usages of short forms in clinical documents, assessed potential features which can be utilized for identifying varying usages, and assembled high frequent usage patterns towards WSD tasks.įor this study, we used a corpus consisting of 40 million clinical notes from 1995 to 2011 retrieved from the Mayo clinical data warehouse. For example, “MEA” stands for “MayoExpertAdvisor”, a short form for a decision support system at Mayo Clinic or “Minnesota Education Assembly”. ![]() Additionally, some short forms have localized usages. For example, the nonmedical usage of “ICE” in “ICE number” as “In Case of an Emergency phone number” is not included in existing clinical terminology resources. Existing clinical terminology resources may not capture their non-medical usages. As described, short forms can have both medical and non-medical usages in clinical documents. However, the prerequisite towards WSD is the creation of a sense inventory which catalogs the associated meanings of those ambiguous words ( 10). ![]() Research ( 5, 9) has been focused to develop individual classifier per short form to achieve reasonable performance rather than one generalized classifier for all. Additionally, expert or distributed semantic (e.g., SNOMED concepts or topic models) features have also been utilized but they highly depend on the comprehensiveness of knowledge resources ( 8) and the availability of a large collection of documents in the corresponding domain. Document metadata features are also crucial but they vary across different EHR systems or institutions. However, those textual features may not perform well in documents that are semi-structured (e.g., containing tables) or not grammatically well formed ( 7) such as Emergency Department (ED) notes. Various textual features (such as POS tags or n-grams) have been inspected ( 5, 6). WSD in the clinical domain has been studied including the use of rules or machine learning (ML) approaches ( 1, 4, 5). For instance, the short form “US” in “The US shows a lesion” and “The patient retired from US army in 2011” has two different meanings where the first one means “Ultrasound”, and the second one means “United States”. Additionally, besides multiple clinical meanings, short forms in clinical texts can also have non-medical English usages. For example, “PT” can stand for “Patient” in the subjective section and it can mean “Prothrombin time” in the assessment section. Second, “one sense per discourse ( 2)”, a common understanding in the general English WSD community, may not hold here ( 3). “DT” can be frequently used as “Discharge time” in Discharge summaries and “Diptheria-tetanus double vaccination” in Immunization reports. For example, “CA” can mean “California”, “Cancer”, and “Calcium” without any clear definition in clinical narratives. They are seldom defined in the text but can have diverse meanings at different settings. First, the appearance of short forms in clinical documents is very different from other domains ( 1). There are some unique characteristics of short forms in the clinical domain. Resolving the high ambiguity of short forms, a special case of word sense disambiguation (WSD), is essential in clinical natural language processing (NLP) systems. ![]() Given the limited number of potential short forms, one short form can have multiple senses. The short forms of medical concepts or expressions (i.e., acronyms/abbreviations) are prevalent in clinical documentation. Our initial findings will be applicable for automatic usage/sense resolution. Usages could be distinguished using basic trigram/bigram/line information. Our short forms had an average of 3.58 senses. The remaining 19% showed alternating usage based upon case form. We identified 68% of our short forms as primarily serving medical usages, whereas 12% had non-medical usages. We assessed various features in their ability to disambiguate medical and non-medical usages. This paper outlines our process of identifying 141 potential short forms with randomly sampled phrases from a large clinical corpus. However, one prerequisite for resolving ambiguity of short forms is to have a sense inventory. ![]() Resolving the ambiguity of short forms is essential in clinical natural language processing (NLP).
